During the three years’ of implementing of the MAKE-IT-BE project, a range of activities actively contributed to the roll-out of bioenergy across Europe. MAKE-IT-BE aims at supporting the development and implementation of integrated bio-energy chains across Europe, through the creation of enabling frameworks (decision-making tools and local partnerships) in four important EU regional contexts (Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Scotland). The central focus was on the creation of a flexible and replicable methodology to support the definition of local integrated bio-energy planning (IBP) in co-operation with local and regional key actors and local authorities. Bio-energy planning on sub-national level is an essential part of the strategy to meet the European 20-20-20 goals: the European Union (EU) has agreed to reach 20% of its total energy consumption through renewable energy sources (RES) by 2020, as outlined in the EU Climate and Energy Package of 2009. This requires a contribution from all RES options, including bio-energy as an important energy resource in Europe.
